Top of the chain

This year GTR has opened up the categories for voting for its trade services and supply chain banks and providers. It shows clearly that there’s an elite of institutions that crop up time and again.

GTR’s annual readers’s poll of banks and providers in the trade services and supply chain world attracted more votes than ever before this year. This may have been to do with the fact that we have opened up the categories to regional voting this time around.

What is obvious is that, with this area of trade services and the supply chain, the same institutions appear time and again, with few ‘outsiders’s mentioned. What is also clear is that there is a trade services elite of banks that consistently dominate the business more than others in most regions, namely: ABN Amro, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, JPMorgan Chase, and Standard Chartered Bank.

These bigger players have the scale and can justify the big investments needed in IT.

Having said that, there are the specialist players like UPS Capital and SCF Capital that are coming up with their own models and are backing them with considerable investment.

These players are probably not big enough yet to warrant too much attention in surveys like these, but they certainly should be watched, and they did receive a few votes.

The winners and runners-up aside, players that also received votes included Bank of America, Bank of China, Barclays, Commerzbank, Fortis Bank, ICICI Bank, ING, Mashreq Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander, SCF Capital, SEB, Société Générale, Standard Bank, Sun Trust, Wachovia, Wells Fargo Bank, UBOC, UBS, UPS Capital and US Bank.
