GTR is delighted to support Shelter Them. Proceeds from the event will go to supporting this charity and their incredible initiative.
Shelter Them is a non-profit organization created in 2005 and dedicated to transforming the lives of vulnerable and underprivileged children in Rwanda. Its mission is rooted in the belief that every child deserves a chance at a bright, independent, and sustainable future. To achieve this, Shelter Them prioritizes meeting the basic growth and development needs of these children through a rich education program, whilst equipping their families with the necessary tools and resources to allow them to flourish in a healthy and conducive environment. Shelter Them focuses the core of its operations in three pillars.
The first focuses on education, providing vulnerable children with access to schooling from nursery all the way to university. Education is a powerful tool to allow children to break away from the poverty cycle and to empower them to realize their full potential.
The second, Family Support, plays a crucial role in ensuring that the families of our children receive the support they need. We work closely with these families to ensure they have access to essential resources, creating an environment conducive to the development and well-being of the children under our care. The third pillar is centered in Community Development. Actively engaging with the local community of the village of Gateko (where we based our activities and schools), Shelter Them has implemented various development projects including the creation of sewing and agricultural cooperatives, access to water and land for farming.
To date, Shelter Them has a nursery school welcoming around a hundred students and a primary school is under construction. This initiative will allow children to have continuity in their educational process in a framework favorable to their development and will deepen Shelter Them intervention in the community. The total cost of the primary school construction is about $80,000. Shelter Them has already raised $10,000 to put the foundation in place. The remainder is about $70,000 to complete construction and accommodate nearly 150 students in October 2024.
