Insurance broker Price Forbes has appointed Ebbe Rabie as senior specialist advisor on agriculture, crop insurance, structured trade credit and political risk insurance in Africa. He joins the firm’s Cape Town office.

Rabie has 25 years of insurance experience. He started his insurance career at Campbell and Williams (GAB Robins), later moving to Hammond & Graaffs, where he developed and sold the first weather derivative in Africa.

In 2003 he was appointed by a consortium of co-ops and banks to start a new specialist underwriter, Agricola, where he managed the portfolio as senior underwriter and built this book to become the third-largest crop insurer in South Africa.

He later moved to the corporate broking market, working with a number of large listed American and UK-based intermediaries across different speciality classes including crop insurance, structured trade credit and political risks, while continuing to maintain a large agri portfolio in Southern Africa.

He has also held positions at Marsh (as business development executive and the designated political risks and trade credit specialist in Africa) and at Glenrand MIB, now Aon (managing the origination of speciality classes comprising crop insurance, structured trade credit and political risks together with JLT in London).

After this merger in 2012, Rabie continued his work with his previous partners at JLT SA, as senior account executive and head of speciality, where he managed the specialist classes with the London team of JLT Credit Political Risk and Securities (CPS).

“We are delighted to welcome Ebbe to our Price Forbes team in the Cape Town office, where he will continue with his specialist insurance skills. We believe that the insurance market in the Western Cape is highly competitive and Ebbe will be a significant addition to the team. Ebbe consults many corporates, commodity traders, fund managers, local and multinational banks and is well known in the local and international insurance market,” says Warren Bolttler, CEO of Price Forbes.
