The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (Miga), a member of the World Bank Group, has appointed Peter Cleary as general counsel. The appointment is effective September 12, 2005.

Cleary will succeed Luis Dodero, Miga’s first general counsel, who retired on July 1.

Cleary, a US national, joins Miga from the law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Hong Kong, where he is a partner and the head of the project finance group in Asia. He has 25 years “experience in advising sponsors and financial institutions on project finance, banking, and corporate matters throughout Asia.

In his new position, Cleary will head Miga’s legal and claims department, help the board of directors apply and interpret the agency’s convention, and advise Miga’s senior management on matters of law and policy related to all Miga activities.
Moreover, he will chair the claims committee to negotiate dispute settlements.
