Iran and Iraq have signed an agreement to set up the first joint power plant in Baghdad, Iraq.

Based on the agreement, Iran’s Sanir Company, affiliated to the energy ministry, is obliged to establish the 315MW power plant in Sadr city, east of the Iraqi capital for Iraq’s electricity ministry.

The Iranian side has agreed to implement the project in almost two years for two districts inhabited by the low income strata of Sadr city.

The project is to cost IR150mn.

There are plans for four more power plants in other Iraqi provinces, tackling the problem of electricity shortages in Iraq.
