The People’s Republic of China has appointed Hu Shouqin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Zambia, as China’s special representative to Comesa, the trading block of east and southern African nations .

China is one of the major development partner of Comesa member states, particularly in transport, telecommunication and agriculture.

Last year China sponsored two members of Comesa’s management to attend diplomatic workshops in China to facilitate the secretariat’s on the ground understanding of China. With the appointment of a special representative, Comesa and China will interact on daily basis and therefore identify other areas of even higher cooperation.

China becomes the third member of the international community to appoint a special representative to Comesa, following France, and the US in 2002 and 2003.
