Citibank has closed down its operations in Muscat, where the US bank maintained its only branch in Oman.

“March 15 was the day of official closure,” Hamud Saleh al-Ambori, vice-president of the central bank of Oman’s banking control department, has announced.

The bank will, however, remain open for around one month from the official closing date to wrap up customer business, he adds.

Ambori would not say why the bank had closed.

Citibank started its operations here in 1975 and built up a customer base of 2,000.

It has branches in the Gulf states of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
