16.20 Panel discussion: Leadership, taking inspiration and the importance of role models

A key message in this conversation seems to be around the role of the individual, a situation which lends itself to the idea of ‘role models’ and finding the necessary sources of inspiration. Among the points to be addressed:

  • What’s new in the conversation? Have there been any recent changes to suggest the diversity and inclusion conversation is being taken more seriously?
  • Is there enough actual action to go with the talk? What is the output of the various programmes and initiatives? What are the government policies around gender equality?
  • Does the corporate environment provide women with the support structure they need? Are we seeing greater flexibility? How can more men be brought on the journey?
  • What inspires young women across the African continent today? How important is it to encourage greater interaction with influential women and potential role models?
  • How competitive is the trade finance sector when it comes to attracting and retaining diverse talent? What is being done to address the gap in African women’s ability to access finance?
