Award-winning global trade finance gathering reconvenes in Singapore
Regional success stories, key financing trends and concerns over China formed the basis for discussions at GTR Asia Trade Finance Week 2015, organised by Global Trade Review which took place at the Raffles City Convention Centre, Swissôtel the Stamford on September 7-10.
Held in partnership with International Enterprise Singapore, the government body responsible for promoting international trade and facilitating the overseas growth of Singapore-based companies, the event is now firmly established as the leading trade finance gathering across the global market, having been awarded the title of ‘Best Asian Conference’ at the Conference Awards 2015.
Taking place over four days, having expanded the format to incorporate a tour of Singapore’s PSA port terminal, additional streams, break-outs, workshops and networking events, the event placed strong emphasis on the trade and export priorities of companies of all sizes, as well as highlighting opportunities across a range of markets and territories across the continent. The conference was opened by Teo Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of International Enterprise Singapore, who delivered the keynote address in line with marking SG50, commemorating 50 years of Singapore’s independence.
“Despite the widespread anxieties over the current situation in China, Asia continues to lead the way in global trade, and nowhere is this more evident than the thriving environment here in Singapore,” says Rupert Sayer, Founder of GTR and CEO of GTR Asia. “Every day we see new trading companies establishing themselves here, as well as banks, insurers and a growing non-bank finance sector, all of whom are keen to take advantage of the superb conditions in place for conducting trade business. We only expect this to continue.”
Key discussion points included commodity trends and financing challenges, evolving regulatory and compliance requirements, supply chain innovation, the role of insurance, RMB internationalisation, alternative finance and the response to financial crime, as well as profiling markets as diverse as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Central Asia and the Asean trade bloc, in addition to trade flows with Africa and Latin America. The opening morning also reflected on preliminary findings from the ICC Global Survey on Trade Finance 2015.
Strong corporate attendance and unrivalled networking opportunities formed a central pillar of the event’s success, with attendance from senior representatives of companies such as Essar, Reliance Industries, Bunge, Rhodium Resources, Siemens, Shell, Vitol, Noble Resources, Coca Cola, Hyundai, BP, Hewlett-Packard, among many others.
