Regarded as the market’s leading pan-African trade finance gathering, GTR Africa Trade Finance Week returned to Cape Town in March 2016.

Over 300 delegates representing 24 countries gathered together to discuss, learn and connect in one of the world’s most exciting and promising regions in which to do business.

Throughout the last decade the conference has provided the international trade finance community with an unrivalled forum for open discussion and debate on Africa’s trade potential and its priorities for the future.

The keynote address by Political Futures Consultancy’s Political Economy Analyst, Daniel Silke, discussed the impact of global events on Africa economies, including the impact of falling commodity prices, US tapering of quantitative easing as well as the impact of the continued slowdown in China, and further examined the economic health of a range of African markets including Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Angola, and Mozambique, identifying key risk indicators as well as highlighting key opportunities.

Over 65 additional speakers gathered at this year’s event, including first Vice-President of Export-Import Bank, Wanda Felton, Chief Executive Officer of Mota-Engil Construction South Africa, Gilberto Rodrigues and Senior Strategist of IDC, Jacqueline Chimhanzi.

“As befits a continent of over 50 widely differing countries, there was much to consider when discussing African trade, whether it was the continuing impact of the global commodity downturn, changing relationships with the likes of the US and China or the ongoing process of industrialisation and development of a viable manufacturing sector,” said Jeff Ando, Associate Director and Head of Conference Production at GTR.

With 149 different companies in attendance including BNDES, Bunge, Barak Fund Management, Barclays, Capespan, Citibank, Duetsche Bank, Distell Group, Ericsson, GE Energy, Gunvor, Nakumatt, Nokia, Novus, PertroSA, amongst many others, 2016’s conference continued to build upon its established reputation, welcoming on and off stage participation from over 300 leading corporates, FIs, regulators, risk managers, lawyers, insurers and all additional trade finance sectors.
