Free, Webinar
May, 26, 2020
The coronavirus pandemic has raised questions throughout the trade community over the role that insurance can play in supporting companies and facilitating bank lending, whether through export credit agencies, whole turnover insurers or the private single situation credit and political risk markets. This interactive and free-flowing webinar delved further into the latest trends around this.

How swiftly have support measures been introduced and how strong have levels of cooperation been with the private market? Has capacity been maintained and where has it needed to be increased? Have some programmes been boosted and other new ones introduced to extend cover? How are ECAs – particularly those who provide direct financing – reducing pressure on obligors with restructured payment terms or working similarly with banks?
Vinco David, Secretary General, Berne Union
How likely is the private insurance market to join the list of sectors seeking government bailouts? Can a wave of claims be expected both in light of the pandemic but also low oil prices? How well placed is the market to honour its obligations? What challenges should be expected around pricing and will insurers need to rethink their business models? How can the private market work with ECAs to form part of the solution?
Sian Aspinall, Managing Director, BPL Global
Peter Sprent, Head of Financial Risk Solutions, Liberty Specialty Markets
With most government support channelled through ECAs and whole turnover insurers, should regulators and policymakers be paying more attention to the single risk insurance market and their insureds? Do the mechanisms introduced so far acknowledge the need for closer cooperation between state entities and private providers? Do some state interventions override previous commercial agreements and if so where does that leave insurers? What work are member associations and representative bodies taking to give the private market a voice when policy is decided? How easy has it been for the industry to speak with one voice?
Robert Nijhout, Executive Director, International Credit Insurance & Surety Association (ICISA)
Carol Searle, General Counsel, Texel Finance
This closing segment will seek to offer a closing summary on the various points raised before running through questions posed by the audience throughout the course of the webinar, hopefully addressing the issues most pressing to our participating audience of market practitioners.
