China Ex-Im funds Sri Lankan airport

Last Updated March 15, 2010

The Export-Import Bank of China (China Ex-Im) has agreed up to US$190mn in financing for the Sri Lankan government to build a second international airport.

The airport will be in Mattala, in the Southern Hambantota area.

China Ex-Im is also providing a US$100mn loan which will go towards re-building Sri Lankan railways.

The deals were signed by Sri Lankan treasury secretary P Jayasundera during a visit to Beijing from March 3-5.

Jayasundera also met China Ex-Im vice president Zhu Hong Jie and entered talks about speeding up the construction of the A9 highway, which runs from the northern Jaffna peninsula to the south of the country.

During 2009, China loaned US$1.2bn to Sri Lanka, becoming the country’s largest lender.

Sri Lanka will also receive a US$100mn loan from the Indian government to go towards building and repairing infrastructure.
